Our Story

In December of 2013, Max Ramsey, David Nelson, and four high school students packed snacks, sandwiches, and coats into a mini-van and drove into downtown Milwaukee. They parked in a lot across the street from the Central Library, knowing that unhoused people often find shelter and resources there during the day.

They set out in pairs, searching for individuals who might want something to eat or a warmer coat, and quickly connected with several people. They directed them to the parked mini-van for snacks, sandwiches, and clothing. Over the next hour, the group shared food and conversation, and as the team was wrapping up, they asked if they would be welcomed back the following week. They were met with a resounding “Yes!” and so StreetLife Communities began.

Today, we are a team of 40+ outreach volunteers and 90+ support volunteers. We provide essential medical care and survival resources to 2,600 individuals each week, including those who are unhoused, sex workers and trafficked individuals. We also run support groups for people recovering from addiction.

And still, the need grows.

A Humble Request

We are a volunteer-powered organization with a modest annual budget. Can we count on your support to help ease the suffering of unhoused members of our community?
